Is Social Media a Distraction for Irvington High School Students?

by Chloe Harcsar

Over the past couple of years social media has gained in popularity, especially with high school students.

According to a survey taken of Irvington High School students, 84% of students reported that they use at least one form of social media daily.

The most popular social media include Instagram and Snapchat. During a school day, 76% of Irvington students say to have used Instagram. And 60% of those students estimated to have used Instagram for at least 30 minutes or more.

70% of students say they use Snapchat at least once per school day, and 50% of students say to have used it for at least 30 minutes or more.

To many students social media is a way to take a break from studying and school.

Lexi Parsons, a sophomore, claims that social media has proven to be a distraction to her school day.

While doing homework, she says that, “once I start looking at my phone it can be hard to look away”.

For many students this is the case, and explains why students estimate to have used social media for hours or more each day.

Parsons also adds that the reason for this is because what she is doing on her phone tends to be “much more interesting than whatever homework I have to do.”

It can be hard to know when a break has been too long, and whether or not social media has affected your schoolwork.

However, despite how long some Irvington High School students typically use social media, only 38% of students say that social media actually distracts them.
