A ligature is a tie that joins two musical phrases, like Dr. Patterson. While Mrs. McCumber is on maternity leave, listening to the polyphony of her two major opuses, Dr. Patterson is the ligature that holds the band together along with the help of Mr. Scatteretico, Mr. DiGiovanni, Ms. Serao, and the rest of the music department.
It’s not easy to fill Mrs. McCumber’s shoes, but Dr. Patterson has triple-timed the task of assuming the responsibilities of the Concert Band, the IHS Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Band, too. His teaching style emphasizes his passion and interest in music.
Freshmen trumpet player Alex Lee commented, “A fun way that he gets the class to be engaged is music trivia, and it’s good for us to explore our music knowledge and have fun at the same time.”
It’s not easy to direct 70+ students in the middle of a season, especially when it culminates in a winter concert and Metlife performance. However, with a wave of his baton, Dr. Patterson transforms the band into a renaissance.
“I am a happy to be here and I hope that I can continue to motivate and inspire music students the way the music faculty here already do,” Dr. Patterson stated.
As for the environment here at IHS, the music students have not been hesitant to welcome Dr. Patterson as the temporary director of the High School band. Students have made sure to attend weekly lessons and class on time, and participate fully to prepare for the upcoming performances under Dr. Patterson’s guidance.
“I’ve really felt welcomed here at IHS. I appreciate how open and how responsive the students have been and how friendly the Faculty and Administration have been. I’ve been made to feel very connected very quickly, and I love the community especially this time of year.”
Bravo, Dr. Patterson!
