The Irvington Bulldogs varsity girls tennis team is having an excellent season, especially star player Charlotte Calick, a sophomore here at IHS.
Resulting from some successful homecoming matches and great season, the team advanced to play in sectionals. In addition to qualifying as a team, several players individually qualified to play in sectionals.
Calick, Harcsar, Luthra, Vatakis, Emily Hanlon and Julia Caldropoli went to play on Tuesday, October 9th in the sectionals tournament.
The team played North Salem on Saturday, October 14th in the semifinals. Unfortunately only two of the matches played were won by IHS, and the Bulldogs did not advance to the next round.
However, individually, Calick advanced to play in the next round.
In the next round called conferences, Calick played Edgemont and won. Calick then went on to play Keio and lost 6-0, 6-1. Playing in the back draw, she beat Bronxville 6-3, 6-3, then advanced to the backdraw finals where she played Albertus Magnus and won 1-6, 6-3, 10-2. Calick will play next on Tuesday, October 16th.
Calick is reportedly the first player to advance this far from Irvington in 17 years.
On Wednesday, October 3rd, the varsity girls tennis team had their homecoming match against rival team Ardsley.
Number one singles player Calick played Ardsley’s Cori McAffree, beginning the match being down 2-6, then coming back and beating McAffree 6-4, 10-6. Calick was then able to seal her win in the tie breaker.
Chloe Harcsar beat Anna Moody 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 for second singles, and Catherine Spellane playing third singles and lost 1-6, 2-6.
Doubles team Pia Luthra and Sophia Vatakis defeated Alexandra Bavara and Alexa Raxenberg 6-4, 6-3 for number one doubles. Second doubles team Katherina Kovaleskaya and Arushi Parekh lost to Sydney Fader and Meiskin 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.
The Bulldogs won three of the the five matches against the Ardsley, resulting in a tie with the Panthers for first place in the league.
“It was a really fun match and I enjoyed spending time with my team. It is always a good time with VGT,” Calick said about her homecoming match.
