The video game that has been sucking in teenagers all across our country, Fortnite, brings together all the best components of past video games to make a game that is fun, competitive, and social.
The premise of the game is quite simple but the buzz around it has created a craze like no other. The idea of the game seems odd at first but once people try it out, most get hooked within a few games.
The game has two modes but the one which most people play is called “Battle Royale” and consists of a few different options. The options are solo, duo, and squad. Regardless of the mode, the game starts with 100 people who each boast their own player on a flying bus.
As they fly over the island, people start to jump off, each choosing their own area of the map. Once they choose an area, most “loot”,gain weapons and materials, that will help them survive when they encounter other people.
Once the game goes on people will start to run into one another on the island and attempt to eliminate each other. This will go on until the last person or team is alive depending on the mode of the game.
In duos, each person has a partner with whom they team up with and try to kill the remaining players. But, in squads, each person joins three other players that act as a team to be the last team alive.
The last person or team alive depending on the mode is awarded with a screen that says “Victory Royale.” This screen has been seen heavily on Snapchat Stories where people like to show off their wins in the game.
People have fallen in love with the game for many reasons such as the social aspect, the competitiveness, or just to be in on the trend.
Sophomore Aden Malone says, “The best part is the collective community.”
This game has great competitiveness because once you die in solo mode you are immediately done with that game. In squad and duo modes, there is a chance at being revived but it is not guaranteed.
The thrill of winning a game and the anger when coming so close yet dying as one of the last few people remaining is what makes people spend hours on the game hoping they will have more luck on the next one.
Another reason this game has really hit off is because people can download and play it without spending a penny. This is why it is appealing to such a large crowd because people are open to trying it with no risk. Of course there are options to upgrade your character and but this doesn’t give you a better advantage when playing the game except for the appearance.
These are just some of the reasons why the game has caught on so well and continues to rise in popularity.
