On Tuesday morning, the 27th, most students at Irvington High School began their day normally. However, at 8:05 a “schedule freeze’” was commenced, followed by a lockout that would last until 10:55.
As the lockout progressed, more information was released that police were looking for suspect in a homicide who may be armed and was seen on White Plains Road in Tarrytown.
The high school resumed their regular schedule at 10:55 still in lockout situation. Students and staff were not permitted to leave the building.
Student body president Cameron Soravilla said, “The idea of keeping everyone in class was well thought out, but I heard people walking through the halls when it was assumed that they were not supposed to.”
Given the anxiety of the situation, Soravilla expressed that she felt safe but believes that securing the campus from a potential shooter is difficult.
“Since a majority of school shooters are students and they go through the same emergency protocol, how can you secure a building against those who might already know the procedures?”
