Rally girls, a club that has been in operation for several years at Irvington, has recently ceased to be.
According to last year’s club leader Mallory Toolan, Rally Girls club was created to promote school spirit and support the boy’s sports teams. But directing the attention to only boys teams and not to girls teams led to a number of complaints and charges of sexism.
Last year, Mr. Cohen spoke to girls in charge of the club and tried to transition it into having spirit for every sport — boys and girls — but because of the lack of interest among students there weren’t enough people to continue to run the club. Therefore, recent graduate Toolan and Principal Mr. Cohen agreed to shut down the club.
Sophomore Mia Mascone said, “I just don’t understand why they didn’t bake for girl sports.”
However, some students are concerned with the current level of school spirit and believe that clubs like Rally Girls could be beneficial.
Okna Freeman, junior, said, “Irvington spirit is horrible. I thought Rally Girls was somewhat improving school spirit, but now there is nothing.”
Mr. Cohen believes that hosting events like Color Wars and Homecoming on the same week will improve our school spirit and help build foundations for our spirit later on.
